Contrary to what many people believe, an orthopaedic mattress is one that gives excellent back support. Many people believe that an orthopaedic is just a firm one. This is the case if you are just talking about open coil sprung mattresses, but with pocket sprung, memory foam, or latex, it just means a mattress that will give excellent support to your back.
If you are on a low budget, then you may be better going for a good quality firm open coil sprung mattress, which will help keep your spine straight because it is a firm flat surface.

If your budget is higher, then you should consider at least pocket springs, but with the addition of memory foam or latex foam if money allows.

The Roslin is a top of the range open coil sprung orthopaedic mattress. At around 10" deep the Roslin is firm whilst being extremely comfortable. It is hand tufted with a 12.5 gauge open coil spring base with a steel rod edge. The mattress is firm for back problem sufferers.

The Carissa mattress is a 10" deep, microquiltd, firm mattress containing a 12.5 guage spring unit, with a steel rod edge for extra support. Although firm, it is still very comfortable due to it's very deep microquilting.
